2.5.2. STEAMING COAL
In 2000, Ukraine exported some 2.3 mln. tons of steaming coal, which
exceeds 1999' shipments by 9% or some 200 ths. tons. Similar to 1999, lean coal and
anthracite contributed the largest portions to the export supplies, both totaling some 2
mln. tons in 2000. The main export supplies depending on coal varieties and supply basis
were as follows: lean coals at USD/mt 17.0-32.0 on average and anthracite at USD/mt
23.0-67.0.
As compared to 1999, distribution of steaming coal supplies expanded in
2000, with Ukrainian steaming coal exported to 20 countries worldwide, whereas the range
of 1999 made 18 countries. The top 5 importers of steaming coal from Ukraine accounted for
about 94% in the total supply turnover against some 85% in 1999. The list of importers is
still headed with Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Moldova. These made an 88% share in the total
export turnover of steaming coal from Ukraine. As regards the Republic of Belarus, which
used to be a traditional market for Ukrainian steaming coal, shipments to this country in
2000 fell some fourfold as compared to the previous year. Simultaneously, exports to
Poland and Spain in 2000 were on increase summing to 130 ths. tons of coal, which suggests
almost a double rise as compared to supplies in 1999.
Distribution of steaming coal shipments from Ukraine in 1999-2000 is
presented in Table 1. Geographical pattern of Ukrainian export of steaming coal in 2000 is
shown at Figure 1.
