SECTORS
Chemical and petrochemical industry
Stable performance was traced in chemical and petrochemical
industry (increase in 2000 made 5% versus 1999. These industries contribute the average of
11% to the total export supplies from Ukraine. However, the key export commodities are
power-consuming products, such as ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers.
In 2000, production of soda ash added 26.3% against 1999,
caustic soda – 35.2%, synthetic resin and plastics – 27.4%, whereas production of
chemical fibber and threads augmented by 32.9%. At the same time, production of ammonia
lost 3.6%, that of mineral fertilizers slashed by 0.6%, production of plant-protecting
chemicals diminished by 41.9%, and tire production decreased by 14.2%.
Woodworking and pulp-and-paper industry
The industry showed stable performance in 2000, with annual
production augmenting by 37.1%. Growth was traced in the following key sectors: chip
plates (+21.1% against 1999); fibber plates (+26.3%); plywood (+27%); furniture (+15%);
cardboard (+36.8%); as well as paper (+26.3%) and cardboard boxes (+33%).
Production of furniture with complete technological cycle
contributes the most to woodworking industry of Ukraine. Some 350 enterprises operate in
furniture production sector of Ukraine. Since sharp recession of 1993-1994, the year 1998
for the first time revealed a 3.7% growth in furniture production. In the following years,
the positive trend remained, as furniture production in 2000 added 15% against 1999.
In 2000, 13 new technologies were introduced in the
Ukrainian woodworking industry, production of 265 new types of goods was commissioned, of
which 230 are consumer goods, in particular, furniture.
Within the pulp-and-paper industry, prevalence of
wastepaper in the balance of raw materials for paper-and-cardboard industry drives the
corresponding trend, which suggests skyrocketing growth rates in production of cardboard.
Light industry
In 2000, light industry boosted output by 39% against 5.7%
in 1999.
As compared to 1999, production of fabrics raised by 33.7%,
knitwear – added 86.5%, footwear – grew by 10.2%, suits – was up by 28.6%, and coats
– increased by 25.5%, whereas production of trousers and dresses extended by 62.3% and
42.2% respectively.
Preliminary data reveal that exports of light products in
2000 outran USD 500 mln. in terms of currency earnings.
Considerable rise in clothing, knitwear, and footwear
industries occurred mainly due to increased competitiveness of Ukrainian products, which
appeared as a result of cooperation experience between Ukrainian enterprises and foreign
companies.
Substantial share of light products is made out of
give-and-take raw materials. According to preliminary information, over 90% of garments,
69% of knitwear, almost half of footwear output, and 19% of hosieries were produced out of
such raw materials in 2000.
Food-processing industry
In 2000, manufacturing of commercial foodstuffs grew by
26.1% against 1999. As compared to 1999, there was registered an increase in production of
following products in 2000: butter (+76.9%), animal oil (28.3%), meat processed products
(+12.4%), meat (+0.7%), confectionery (+31.6%), and cheese (+6.3%).
In 2000, the volume of beet processed amounted to 13.2 mln.
tons (-7% against 1999) with sugar content losing 0.9% against the respective figure of
1999. This called forth a 4.2% drop in sugar production as compared to 1999.
230 ths. tons of cane raw sugar were imported. 220 ths.
tons of white sugar were produced out of this amount.
In 1999-2000 marketing season, the volume of sunflower
seeds processed increased 1.7 times against the 1998-1999 season, budget revenues from
fat-and-oil industries added 70%, capacities rate increased from 34% up to 54%. |
